OPPORTUNITY GRANTS

There are times when local nonprofit organizations need some help during situations where timeliness is of the utmost importance. These "Opportunity Grants" enable our Executive Director to expedite small grant awards, usually $250-$2,000 range, without the need to go through the Foundation's semi-annual grant process. Please call the office for details on how to apply for an Opportunity Grant.

Opportunity Grants awarded in 2007 include:

The Growing Place - The dishwasher at this DeKalb child care center failed, and this grant enabled a new unit to be installed.

$1,500

Conexion Comunidad - A faulty door leading to the expanded basement quarters at this DeKalb neighborhood center was replaced.
$850
DeKalb Public Library - This grant enabled the facility to leverage an award from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, which added another $2,000 in support of "The Big Read" program. The project initially got off the ground with a $5,000 grant from the National Endowment of the Arts. Proof positive of how national, regional and local collaboration can add up to something really special!
$2,000
Children's Learning Center/The Growing Place - When this year's floods struck, the rainfall's force washed out the playground behind these two southside child care centers in DeKalb. This small grant allowed resurfacing and new groundcover material to be purchased and installed.
$700
Flewellin Memorial Library - The furnace at this Shabbona facility had seen better days, and this grant helped with the cost of installing a new unit. $1.500
Egyptian Theatre - Regional floods again were the culprit, as this DeKalb landmark suffered severe damage to its walls, flooring and other areas in the theatre. This grant assisted in the cleanup and repair. $2,000
DeKalb County Special Education Association - This small investment allowed resource directory CDs to be provided to all attendees at the countywide Community Resources for Youth (CRY) breakfast held this fall. $375
DCP/Safe - DeKalb County Partnership for a Safe, Active and Family Environment - Project Success. This group supports a Sandwich Hispanic Coalition, which was in dire need of funds to assist in transportation for its afterschool program, and this small grant came to the rescue. $800
